What is it?
Dragon Con is an annual event in Atlanta, Georgia, and is one of the nation’s leading multi-media and pop culture conventions! It brings you the latest in science fiction and fantasy gaming, comics, literature, art, music, and film. Held annually over Labor Day Weekend, it is an event not to be missed. Four days of workshops, panels, guest appearances, music, shopping, and just plain fun!
What to do at Dragon Con?
One of the many things on our to-do list is to still see the parade. We have not been able to attend the parade in years past, due to scheduling. So I am really looking forward to it. 3000 participants make it Atlanta’s largest parade. But that is just one thing on a very long list.
Dragon Con is actually many events in one, In the “Dealers Room” up-and-comers will have the chance to showcase their newest wares and fans get sneak peeks at the hottest new games and gadgets. Artist alley is one of my favorite places. You can meet the artist, see their latest work, talk art, and even get a commissioned piece.
Art is huge at the Con. And not just in the alley. You see it everywhere, in the architecture of Atlantas landscape, in the decor of the hotels, the costumes, the displays, It’s everywhere! I understand that last year they opened an Art Show, and this year has over 2oo entries, I am stoked! I missed the deadline to apply but I am looking forward to next year and very excited to see all the other great work.
So much to do:
There are workshops and panels for everything from Belly-Dancing to FX. You can meet and interact with your favorite actors, writers, illustrators, voice actors, publishers, musical talent, the list goes on and on. My favorite so far is getting to meet Alice Cooper. The show panels are always a blast too. I love listening to the actors answer the fans’ questions, bringing them insights to the behind the scene world. Some of them are more like comedy shows than anything else.
And In case you just want to zone out and take in some game time; They have just the spot, a gaming room. You can play and preview the hottest and not yet released games. Video Games, are not your thing? How bout board games, tabletop games, role-playing, cards? They have it all!
Still not into it, how bout combining sharks, whales, fish, and other aquatic life? They also do a night at the aquarium. visit the Georgia Aquarium in costume, NOW that’s entertainment!
Dragoncon really is a celebration of mixed media arts and the whole Geek experience! But it is so much more than that. It is a meeting of like minds. A place to fit in and belong, a no-judgment zone so to speak.
Important to note:
Dragon Con also gives back! The annual Dragon Con Charity Auction raises donations for various charities that participate in the event. Thousands of dollars have been raised for local and national charity organizations.
